On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Rick what gave him the passion to start writing his book. "I'm the kind of person that I'm motivated when you tell me I can't do something, I'm going to prove you wrong and I can do it," Rick says. "I've been like that my whole life. When I went through high school and college, English was not my best subject. I was very good in math and fraternities, but English was not my best subject. When I got out into the business world, I took this aptitude test and I tested very high on it and I realized that you didn't have to be book smart to be smart, and I was tested out that I have a very abstract reasoning mind. And so I identify problems, come up with solutions easy. I was just sitting around one day and it wasn't long after Hurricane Ike hit here, I just wanted to always write a novel. So I started writing. It took me a long time to write, but I finished it up last year. And I'd start and get busy, start again, get busy. And I'd have to go back, and every time I'd go back and restart, I'd have to read it to see where I was and look at all my notes to get back on. I have a good imagination and I just, you know, started putting notes down, kind of put an outline down on what I want to do and that's what came out. When I sat down to write the novel, I had no idea what I was going to write about, but that's what came out and I had fun doing it."

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks G. Russell to reminisce on his earliest memories of his grandmother, and how his journey of storytelling began. "Well, I'm very fortunate that I have a close-loving family and spending Summers with my grandmother. It was eye-opening, and you would think after the lessons I had learned before that point that I would have kept my mouth shut, but no... as far as the writing was concerned. I wanted to watch cartoons. She wanted to watch black and white movies.... And I told that her black and white movies are boring and I could tell better stories with an arm tied behind my back... She got me a stack of pads and a box of pencils and said 'prove it.' So there I was, Charlie Brown style... and when I finished one pad I looked up and she had that tilted head look like, 'What is this kid doing?' So she started reading, and I'm on the second pad, and she stops me from writing and basically [says,] 'Get your jacket, let's go.' We walk to the local library, she pulls down The Three Musketeers and reads it to me... it just blew my mind, and I've been chasing good stories ever since."

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Dennis about the imagery inside and the attention to detail that he took when packaging the book so nicely. "At the end of a podcast where I had answered [this] question... I said, you know, 'form the habit of reading everyday, something that moves you towards your ultimate goal.' After that podcast I thought, 'Wouldn't it be great that someone came up with a tool? You know, an app, or a book.' And then it hit me. I said, 'goodness, I've been collecting poems, quotes and success stories for many many years. I can do this. I can take these things I already have and put them together and in 3 months I'll have a book, andwe'll be able to go from there.' Well, that was in 2018 and it got published this year. So for the next 5 and 1/2 years I spent time refining and and changing and taking out things and putting in new things and doing research. The hardest part of putting the book together was I had a hundred stories and if I had put all all of them in there the book would have been, you know, an encyclopedia."

Well, when Covid happened I had more free time than I've ever had as an adult that I can even remember. So I said to myself, 'you know, maybe I can write a book to help people,' and that was really the motivation is to help to share what I've learned. So people could, you know, help themselves."

"As time changed, and it changed probably 3 or 4 times," John says. "Because we're talking in the early 2000s or mid 2000s, things were different, and then they changed from that. So it had to continue to change. So I had to bring in people that was, you know, millennials, that kind of went through the old guard to the new guard. They kind of bridged the gap between the old guard and the new guard."

I even question myself with that very same question and truly I think what it's been is again going along the concept of delayed gratification," Dr. Justo says. "In the first half of my career professional career I made some good decisions and I made some really bad decisions that the second half of my career is when I really excelled and I learned from my mistakes. I embrace those mistakes and as my wife repeatedly tells me that I made lemonade out of all the lemons that I was dealt. But certainly, I'm very proud of what I've accomplished and so I started thinking, you know, especially raising our kids. It's been probably the biggest challenge in my life. It is not really fully realizing how difficult in today's society it is, raising teenagers in particular, and so this whole concept of the delayed gratification really started hitting... I try and talk to them and explain to them. And you know, they nod their head and they seemingly agree but in reality they don't, because I see their actions and I see what they say, and so they just don't get it. They just don't get it. So so as a result I first decided to venture in the way of the TEDx stage and that happened purely by in a sense just by luck... here it is, now August. We're what, seven, eight months into it? And it's now exceeded over 6 million views. But even prior to that, you know I saw the momentum that it was gaining and that's what started me thinking, 'hey, you know maybe I need to write a book about this and see if I can expand upon the concepts which I started.'"
